Development of hoofproblems

Horses are not living in their original, natural environment and are constantly vulnerable to harmful fungi, bacteria and aggressive acids which can affect the horn of the hoof.

Development of micro-baterial infections
Decayed organic materials such as manure are broken down by micro-organisms which can also represent a danger to hooves since hooves are composed in part of dead keratine cells which are decayed organic materials.

The instinct of the horse
This explains why horses in nature or in the field instinctively refuse to graze on places where they have left their droppings. These places can be recognized by the high grass left untouched, even when good grazing is no longer available. Horses urinate in such a way as not to soil themselves. This way they protect themselves against the detrimental influence of aggressive acids in the urine. The way in which we presently accommodate our horses can cause problems we do not intend to occur, but which are nevertheless caused by us.
