Hoofproblems

The function of the hoof

The importance of the hoof is seriously underestimated! The hoof is not just a lifeless nail. This big nail incorporates a naturally developed, ingenious system of joints, ligaments, tendons, fatty tissue, bursa, arteries, etc. The horn is covered by a protective layer that ensures that the body of the horse produces the correct degree of humidity in the hoof. This protects the horn against drying out and absorption of external fluids. In this way the natural elasticity of the hoof is secured and the quality of the horn constantly maintained by proper circulation in the hoof.

Good, sound hooves are indispensable for the proper functionality of the horse

However, a hoof affected by fungi and/or bacteria is impeded in its functionality. This can cause various problems, which only reveal themselves to the human eye when the disease has reached an advanced stage. Only then does the infection become visible by incorrect positions of the lower limbs and a deviating form of the hoof. This will at least cause irritation and in the worst case even injuries and pain.

Treatment of white line disease

In the case of white line disease, -the white line is affected first and worst, because it has a more open and weaker structure. In addition, although not immediately visible, it will also damage other parts of the hoof. The position of the hoof in relation to the limb will change.

Thrush

  • Thrush
  • Infections of the coronet
  • Infections of the hoof cushion

When diseased, the frog (cushion and coronet of the hoof) produces a fatty substance. When the cushion and coronet of the hoof are also infected, these parts should also be treated. Thrush increases the chances of cancer in the hoof. When the infection has turned inwards, only a specialist can offer the intensive treatment that will help your horse.
